   Call me a pessimist, but an ice cream shop opening just in time for winter? And Captain Buzzy’s and Jumpin J’s both serve ice cream already, right? Maybe it’ll work though if they supplement ice cream with something else that would sell well when it was cold out. Like say, coffee.

   I used to work at the old Price’s Market on Strawberry Street and we sold a ton of ice cream in the winter. (and beer)

   The sign says it’ll be an “old fashioned ice cream parlor” and that they’ll also have “souther delicacies” … whatever that means. Like j, I wonder if this niche is already filled in the neighborhood, but I’m interested to see what they do with it.

   My wife pointed out that it’s kinda funny having an ice cream parlor next to a modeling agency.

   I wondered about the Southern delicicies, too - told a friend about it and she said, well, if it’s stuff like pies, they couldn’t open at a better time than Thanksgiving! She’s a pie fanatic esp. at holiday time…she’d buy three or four for Thanksgiving dinner, if they were classic pies.

   Archie - tell your wife that I saw the irony about ice cream next to a modeling agency too!

   How about a (nice) convenience store or better yet, a delicatessen? A good, old fashioned NY style bagel shop would be wonderful, but what do I know? :)

   We already have Jumpin J’s and of course, Captain Buzzy’s. How many more of these coffee/ice cream/pastry shops can the Hill support?

   hmmm…i’m not so much against the idea of “another” ice cream/pastry/coffee shop…if it weren’t so close to Buzzy’s. could things be spread out a bit so that people in the north or further east of Church Hill could have stumbling-distance places?

   also, i think that when the phrase “southern delicacies” is used, it usually involves possum, snake, moonshine and crab. all of which make lovely ice creams.

   My opinion: You can never EVER have too much ice cream. And, as someone who hails from the deep South (Charleston, SC), I can assure you that no Southern delicacy has anything to do with possum or snake, although moonshine and crab could be possible ingredients. Seriously, Buzzy only sells a little bit of ice cream. I think this place - advertised as an “old fashioned ice cream parlor”, from what I read on the sign - wouldn’t really be in direct competition with Buzzy or J’s.

    AND they might have malts, milkshakes, rootbeer floats and real soda fountain drinks… I say bring it on and let’s support all the business entrepreneurs that want to lay ground in Church Hill.

    V — Buzzy’s makes a nice milkshake. (I don’t know about J’s, but I suspect the same is true there.)

    Agreed, though, I’m looking forward to supporting another local establishment.

    I know they are only a block and a half apart, but the new place will probably benefit from the tourist traffic around St. John’s in a way that Buzzy’s doesn’t.

    JP- there was a place at 28th & Leigh that sold ice cream, but it was more of a popsicle & ice-cream sandwich kinda place than a proper parlor. I’ve not been through that block in over a year, so I dunno if it’s still there, but I suspect it wouldn’t be genteel enough for a lot of folks.

    Personally I love the idea of a real old fashioned ice cream parlor that my son and I can walk to, especially the weeks he does good at school. And my mom has taught him all about root beer floats, too.

    i literally sat at my neighbor’s house the other night and had an entire conversation about how we wished there was an ice cream shop in church hill that we could go to for dessert.

    i think that having an ice cream parlor that is open for ice cream hours (i. e. AFTER dinner) would be excellent. i mean there are tons of ice cream places around town that sell only ice cream and appear to be doing fine!

    bring it on!

    There is another coffee shop getting ready to open, this one is at 21st and Main Streets on the northeast corner. I noticed the signs up this afternoon on my way home. I would think it would draw people from all those loft apartments down on the river - be easier to walk there than to go all the way up the hill to either J’s or Buzzy’s.

    Sorry, this isn’t directly related to the ice cream store, but I couldn’t figure out where else to post it.

    Whatever happened to good old fashioned delis and bakeries? To heck with *another* ice cream shop…how about fresh meats and/or pies and pastries!

    I also think a pet boutique would do quite well in Church Hill. There are VERY few places to get high end, non-”grocery store” premium dog/cat foods (like Canidae, Innova, Wellness, Timberwolf, etc…)and even fewer places to find upscale pet merchandise.

    Going to Brewster’s Ice Cream on Staple’s Mill is a long way to go for GOOD ice cream. I welcome this shop to the Hill. Ice cream in the winter is great!
