sports bar?

A reader asks: “How would the community feel about having a sports bar in Church Hill?”

Depends. It’d have to be more than just a sports bar — it would need to have some good standard bar food. But, in many ways, I think Church Hill is a lot like Federal Hill in Baltimore and there are some nice neighborhood sports bars there (although I wouldn’t want it to be one of the night club-type bars that they have). I think competition would be steep with BWW in the bottom.

I think the “nice little pub that happens to have sports on all the time” would work versus the standard sports-bar design.

    Isn’t Poe’s a sports bar?

Poes has sports on all the time & has the nfl ticket. We also like Stool pigeons
in the bottom. It’s not quite as juvenile
    as bw3.

A bar/pub with a pool hall and dart boards would be a perfect addition to the neighborhood. Reasonable prices on beer would be a plus.

that would be wonderful. What block and/or whose house should be put it next to?

how about on 25th near the 1st precinct building?

I would love a local hangout that I could walk to and have reasonably priced adult beverages; I believe that I would be a regular. I really enjoy the Hill Cafe, but would like to change it up a bit. Make it happen!

ummm…. don’t we already have a sports bar, with reasonably priced ‘adult beverages’ called Poe’s Pub? Depends on where you live if you can or WANT to walk there – it’s downhill all the way, but the climb back uphill might be a bit much afterwards.

They do, however, have ESPN on hi-def televisions all the time; I can’t remember how many screens but at least six – or do you folks want a franchised sports bar like Mulligan’s or something? Poe’s is, after all, ALSO a neighborhood bar, not by any means a franchise! And, as blue noted, above, they have the NFL ticket.

Sorry, I just don’t get what you’re looking for, I think Poe’s fits the bill, but then I’m not into the typical west end franchised sports bar!

BTW, Poe’s used to have a pool table, and still does have a dart board, to the best of my knowledge. Hmm, perhaps a pool hall with dart board up there on 25th near 1st precinct would be a great idea….

I think a nice, “non-dive” type establishment would add to the neighborhood if done in the right manner. If it had character (inside & out) to distinguish it from Buffalo Wild & the like, that would be pretty cool.

i would personally love to see a ‘capital ale house’ like bar in the area. nicer than your average sports bar, but pool tables, dart boards, and a late night menu included. yum.

the sentiment is nice but I don’t see a corporate or high end bar moving into the Hill anytime soon. The only type of places that will flourish here are places that cater to the local population and the surroundings. Thus, places like Poe’s, Hill Cafe, and Acappella are the type of local establishments that will continue to thrive. While I’d like to have a place to play pool and throw darts I just can’t see something like a capital ale or a straight sports bar being succesful in this area.

Is 6th & Main too far – Capital Ale has a location there.
I think Poe’s is the best place around for a sport’s bar and the good music at night.

have you guys seen the for sale sign on the two places next to the post office on 25th? (i forget the exact address. 412 or something like that.) one of them used to be malone’s place, and the other was a barber shop. malone’s place now has a “sale pending” sign. perhaps the reader who sent in the question is planning something? i would pretty much go to any kind of restaurant that replaced those vacant stores!

I’d go to a sports bar that had one of those hand shuffleboard table games. I’m not really a sports bar kinda girl but another bar/food place would be great- affordable and with veggie options… that might be asking too much.

I require Golden Tee, NBA League Pass, and cheap pints. Pinball would be a big plus.

I don’t know who bought the two businesses next to the post office, but I do know who is going to manage a restaurant out of one of the spaces. We know that dad of the guy. He runs The Ranch over near the main post office on Chamberlayne.

I don’t know if he’s going to do a sports bar theme. You might want to check out The Ranch to see what it might be.

That would be awesome! I’d love to meet people in the neighborhood who share similar joys and pains of the Redskins.

The sportsbar in the fan which just opened not to long ago, would be perfect on 25th somewhere.

How about Rosie Connolly’s on 17th Street? Great food, reasonable prices and a dart board. Sports on the TV’s!
