I’ve lived in the first precinct for 7 years and commanders and captains fly in and out of here so fast I’ve lost track. Is this normal in all precincts? Is it an effective way to address safety and crime on our neighborhoods?
Just curous and looking to hear some opinions on that….
Kimmy in Fulton Hill
People get promoted and transfered all of the time. First Precinct has led the way for the past 2 years in crime reduction so there is no wonder these officers were able to get promoted and transfered to other jobs. Also, it’s nice to have fresh ideas once in a while. Not that the things that John and Hamlett did weren’t great but they were able to go other places because of what they did. Martin and Ladin are fine officers and the precinct is in good hands, you can rest assured.
We’ll certainly miss the ‘institutional knowledge’ that the departing officers take with them. While I have no doubt the incoming officers are excellent and know policing, but there’s always some lag time while they learn all the neighborhood stuff.
Perhaps they have already been orientated to the neighborhood, or are in the process now before their predecessors depart. These officers know the job and do their best to assure there is no “lag time”.
Thanks for sharing your opinions Bob, Ann and Tiny. I believe I do cling to the ideal of getting to know community leaders, having them around for the long haul and being invested in the neighborhood…but that’s an ideal; probably a throw back idea even. While I have seen improvements in our neighborhood since we first moved here 7 years ago, I would give a great deal of credit to the many residents who work tirelessly on public safety.
