Wilder wants McQuinn to vacate EDI?

We were forwarded an email that appears to have been sent out from Sam Patterson (liaison to 7 District Council Representative McQuinn) as a response to a request by Mayor Wilder to move from her office space at the East District Initiative building.

The full text of the email:

I write in reply to your memorandum of June 12, 2007. I am in receipt of your letter suggesting that I vacate the district office that I use located in the East District Initiative (EDI) Building so that it can be used for “critical needs”. As you will recall, I have met with you since receiving your May 10, 2007 memorandum. At that time I explained that I use this office space to serve the citizens who have difficulty getting to City Hall. I will reiterate here that I do not wish to vacate this office space. I wish to continue using the offices at EDI Building for the following reasons:

  • Since I have been on Council, my liaison and I have used these offices to reach out to some of the City’s poorest citizens, as did my predecessor on Council from the 7th District. As you know, it is often inconvenient and very difficult for many of our poorest and disabled citizens get to City Hall.

  • One of the primary reasons for establishing the EDI Building was to provide office space for use by elected officials who needed to meet with citizens.

  • Citizens of the 7th District now expect to be able to reach a Council member at the EDI Building.

  • There are other vacant offices at the EDI Building that you can used for the purposes you give a as the reason for needing the offices that I use.

  • The City Charter grants Council ultimate authority to control and regulate City owned property. See, Chapter 2, Section 2.03 (h). While Council has not yet acted to fully assert this authority. City Council is currently considering Ord. No. 2007-161 to require Council approval of changes in the use of all City owned property and has entered into good faith discussions with the Administration regarding the breadth this measure. Your demands that a member of Council vacate office space during such discussions are a violation of such good faith.

While I am amenable to discussing relocating to another City owned building near the EDI Building; I do not wish to vacate the space at the EDI Building at this time. You may cancel your arrangements to have Department of Public Works personnel move items from the offices that I use at the EDI Building. If you wish to discuss this matter further please do not hesitate to call.

As much as I dislike McQuinn, I do think that a good point is made here. She should have easily accessable offices in her district. Let her stay.

Now if we could only get her to do some real work for the district.

Okay, this is getting to “last-straw” stage! Is McQuinn supposed work in a from tent in the parking lot? Will she at least get an extension cord?

Wilder has threatened to close down my kid’s school, eliminate the school bus that serves our block, fire the city administrative staff, evict the school board, and now evict McQuinn? Why - because she disagrees with him? Is there a way to impeach Emperor Wilder before 2008?

BTW: Did anyone else besides me notice that Wilder came to the 400 Celebration of Richmond in Libby Park via HELICOPTER!!

Why is vice-president mcquinn so upset about being told to move when she doesn’t mind doing the same to elderly and disabled neighborhood residents? passing the church hill north old and historic city of richmond ordinance without an economic impact study will force those who cannot afford the “historic” upkeep to move. Here’s the scenario: 1.facades fall into disrepair 2. the city cites for building code violations 3. residents are forced to sell or leave.
so, mcquinn’s getting a taste of her own medicine. we can bury our heads in the sand and hope that it won’t get any worse or we can fight back when city council treats us like servants instead of it’s master.

mayor wilder has the right idea. good riddance to vice president mcquinn. she only looks after her own interests anyway. now, if we can only boot her out of office.

Please name one positive initiative that McQuinn has lead the charge on? She opposed much of the development that she now takes credit for.

I wonder if Wilder took McQuinn’s Swingline Stapler as well? I’ll wait for the TPS reports.

Hey Delores, what’s happening. I’m going to need you to move down to the basement. Yeah. And while you’re down there, how about taking care of the roach problem too. Yeah….

  8. posted by Seriously folks at July 2, 2007 3:00 pm :

Just because you don’t like McQuinn doesn’t make Wilder’s actions appropriate. It’s about the process, not the person.

Wilder and McQuinn are bitter political enemies becasue McQuinn is a Henry Marsh protege, against whom Wilder is a sworn enemy. Wilder didn’t even show up at the slavery reconciliation statue unveiling that McQuinn MC’d- which the Ebony & Jet reporters I met both commented on. His hatred of her makes him take irrational actions.

Like telling her she can’t rent an office. I’m not a McQuinn fan, but what right does he have to tell her where she can and can’t have an office?

  9. posted by GRRRR at July 2, 2007 3:12 pm :

I agree. McQuinn is a waste of space, but she should be able to waste any space that she can afford to rent.

If the city has a valid cause to evict her, then so be it. But if it is political, then let her stay.

The rules should be the same for her as it is for any person.

Now, does anyone know if she plans on ever fixing up her garage/ how the hearings went?

  10. posted by bill at July 2, 2007 10:07 pm :

rumor has it that mcquinn’s office lock was changed and was not able to get into the this morning

  11. posted by GRRRR at July 3, 2007 8:52 am :

Perhaps she can split rent with the school board now that they too have been evicted.

  12. posted by Just411ice at July 3, 2007 9:59 am :

Have there ever been two less sympathetic political characters than these two? The simmering tension between Stalin and Hitler comes to mind, but that would be giving these two local despots too much credit. Let us hope that the Richmond electorate transitions from the role of cheerleader in time for the next at-large mayor campaign.
