neighborhood and city data

One of the take-aways from tonight’s 7th District Round Table (more on that later) is DataShare Metro Richmond, a great interface to US Census data on a city, regional, and neighborhood level.

The neighborhoods into which the area is sectioned (above) are different that I’ve seen before (the police maps, for example: Sector 111Sector 113).

Yeah, I’ve not seen those neighborhood boundaries either. Makes for some interesting demographics in the neighborhoods.

The ‘population’ for Union Hill is shown as 100% African American.

Look at how Union Hill is defined for their purposes. Church Hill North has boundaries that make the numbers look skewed, too. (and these numbers are from the 2000 Census, too)

How bizarre. Wonder why there are so many maps/versions of the same area. Although I shouldn’t be surprised. When my older son was in Jordan recently (school with the U.S. Army), he found that Jordanian maps have a western border not like what we view on most other maps of Jordan…there is no mention of Israel.

  5. posted by Humbert at May 24, 2007 9:48 am :

So, the city of Richmond is trying to reconfigure its maps to deny the existence of Isreal?

  6. posted by Kevin Allison at June 5, 2007 9:45 am :

I’m not sure it’s quite that ominous. The most complete and available information that DataShare can use comes from the 2000 Census and the smallest geographical area on which that data is available is the ‘blockgroup’ level. Those units do not line up exactly with City definitions of neighborhood boundaries, but the block groups are the closest we can get to providing information that is related to smaller geographical areas like neighborhoods. Sometimes we use one block group; sometimes neighborhoods contain several blockgroups.

You feedback is always welcome and we hope to continue to strengthen the website to make it more useful.

Those boundaries are totally incorrect and those names are as well. I will be doing a complete map of the city’s actual neighborhoods based on the deeds very soon.
