Scott guilty in Holt murder

Jamar Tyron Scott was found guilty of second-degree murder for the August 2006 shooting of Holt Smith Jr. [via].

According to evidence in the one-day trial, Scott — then 17 — and Tyquane Marquise Lynch, then 15, robbed or attempted to rob Smith on Aug. 30 about 6 a.m. Smith, who was on his way to work, was shot six times with the .25-caliber pistol in Scott’s possession when police apprehended Scott roughly an hour later.

A witness who saw parts of what happened said the two young men walked up the street, appeared to talk, then came back, and then one of them crouched and started firing a handgun between two cars.

That’s where Smith was apparently gathering up his remaining possessions, which were strewn on the ground after the robbery, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Traci B. Miller told the jury. The trajectory of his bullet wounds indicated he was on all fours when the shooting started.

Just want the community to know that the arrests that morning of the murder were made by First precinct officers. They pursued them into Oakwood cemetary and set up a perimeter – they were seen exiting the woods along the interstate and apprehended by the Exxon on Nine Mile Road.

Great work by officers removed these ruthless teenagers from the streets two hours after the senseless murder.

Thanks to all the officers of the first precinct who make our neighborhood a safe place to live.

I want to add my thanks to the men and women of the First Precinct as well. I understand that they have led the city in crime reduction two years in a row. We are lucky to have such a dedicated force serving our community.

I hope that the loss of this man who fought for civil rights as a “freedom rider” motivates his peers to speak up and teach kids about the sacrifices that Mr. Smith and others made during the civil rights movement. Do these kids and their peers even have a clue about what this man did to make life better for their generation? There will be many more kids like lynch and scott and locking them up won’t solve the problem. Unfortunately, there won’t be enough good men like Holt Smith if this kind of ignorance persists.
