Oh, lordy, somebody save the cows…we need to form a posse…
Good Lord look at that cow
“after a hard scuffle”
At least it put up a fight.
To quote a recent response from a related post … “JUST KILL THE WILD DOGS! Enough talk –We need to sanction a hunting party armed with sharp sticks and two way radios to hunt down the wild dogs and kill them where they sleep. (OK, perhaps in 1862 we would need tin cans and a looooong piece of twine, but stick with me…) Better yet, we can tie a cat covered in pork fat to a stake in the middle of Libbie Park and hide in the bushes. It’s that simple. Back in the day (we’re already in 1862, didn’t they have this?), we would simply slip them a bitter pill, i.e. a strychnine hamburger. They’re wild dogs for God’s sake –and you treat them like they have feelings and rights. The city will take care of it? The city cannot even control the two legged population, much less the four legged. The best thing the city could do would be to list the zero bag limit on wild dogs and let us hunt them like they need to be hunted.”.
So the Hill has always had packs of killer dogs eating neighborhood pets…
speaking of wild dogs and 1862, does anyone know what that weird-ass parade on broad heading west towards boulevard was this past saturday (circa 2007)? there were tons of folks with confederate flags, hoop skirts, parasols, horse-drawn carts, etc. not quite church hill related, i guess, but broad street runs through the hill, too!
SLANTblog has it as the 200th birthday of Robert E. Lee.
Uhhhhhh…I do believe that is a bull, and not a cow.
What a fascinating story.
Ann, the whole things sounds like bull to me!
There was an Adams family farm that covered north of Marshall. Jefferson promised Adams that the farm would be bought for the new capitol. Jefferson went to Europe to make up some building plans. Wm Byrd was in debt gambling and had a lottery for his land. Seeing the land grab opportunity, the General Assembley members bought in. Jefferson returned and and put his plans on Byrd land. Cows were raised at Marshall and north up until the 20c. The Valentine has photos of cows in the Adams family cemetery near 24 & Marshall.
Good morning,
On the animal note, I once knew a social worker from the 40’s who remembered sheep being herded down E. Franklin Street. She told me they loved to graze at Libby Hill and Richmond Hill.
Anyway, apart from the animal note (or is it?) I thought Mac the Cop should know that 3 cars passed my door on that same street this morning going in excess of 50 mph.
I’ll take the sheep any day.

Oh lordy… we need to set traps for these ner do wells. Perhaps angry mobs with sharp sticks to puncture their tires.
I have never, in almost 20 years of law enforcement, written a speeding ticket. I felt a bit hypocritical because I tend to go above the speed limit. But, I plan on going to the next radar school the department puts on in an effort to make our neighborhood and streets safer. I guess all things change with age.
Mac the Cop - PLEASE DO the radar school thing, and please do SOMETHING to enforce the speed limit around here! It’s not just on East Franklin, it’s all over this area! That includes enforcing the stop signs - please give tickets out for those who do not stop! Thanks.
And stop those wild dogs from driving cars….
As long as the dogs have a license, what can I do?
Mac!! There’s no speed limit sign on all of E. Franklin except at 25th Street!!!?@#%!
Old and tired
Old and Tired, if there is no speed limit sign on the street (any street)the speed limit is set at 25 mph.
Guess this has gotten a bit off topic…but is it illegal to pass cars on an unlined road (say Clay St between 25th and 35th). I’ve been passed a couple times and felt a bit too sheepish to actually call the police.
To make sure, I’ll look it up but off hand I’ll say it’s okay. If, you were passed on the left and the passing vehicle did not exceed the speed limit. No matter the speed limit, you cannot drive in a reckless manner. I will make sure I’m right and reply to my own posting.
Those cows, always blocking intersections. Go dogs!
About the passing. You can pass on the left as long as there is not a double yellow line or proper signage. You can pass on the right if a vehicle is turning left. I’m boiling down the state code. And all of this passing can only be done if it is safe to do so.
