big ass tv

Word is that Richmond Sports Backers will have a Jumbotron set up for watching the progress of the U.S. Open Cycling Championship race tomorrow. If it snows, they’ll be playing Shaun of the Dead

If it were a cyclocross race they would be praying for snow…

Shaun of the Dead?! I love that movie! Now I’m praying for snow.

[...] If the jumbotron freaks you out or whatever, you can join the folks at the Jefferson Avenue garden for a few hours of work and community at the Tricycle Gardens Community Work Day tomorrow (Saturday) from 11AM to 3PM. They will be preparing the garden for spring, finished the roof on the shed, and learning more about gardening, building gardens, and the growing number of gardens in Richmond. i just jogged by libby hill this morning, and the jumbotron is up, the course is marked, and it looks like everything is still a go.

They were an hour late starting this morning.

What a great day for the race. I walked the dogs over there from Union Hill, there was a respectable crowd, and they were enthusiastic (though I forgot my cow bell, shame on me). The racers climbed that hill eight times after starting in Williamsburg! In the snow! At 18 degrees! And to top it all off, the winner pulled away from the second place finisher _on the way up Libby Hill_ on the last lap. Now that’s sports excitement, people. I sure hope they bring it back next year, maybe get a bit more of a festival feel going in the park. And I hope John got better photos than I did.

There are some really great photos by people other than myself in the Church Hill Flickr group.

I’ve never been more proud or impressed than by the bike race. Can mere mortals realize what it takes physically to ride in 18 degrees from Williamsburg, up the cobblestones of Libby Hill’s carriage drive, then all over the Main roads of Richmond 8 or 9 times?

What incredible people! What an incredible place Church Hill is! Thank you for bringing the bike race to us. Please bring it back.

Thank you CHPN for getting the word out about US Open Cycling Championship. It was a great event and fabulous to see professional cycling back in Richmond and Church Hill!

This was a great race, and Church Hill should be proud - that was the most exciting spot on the circuit! If anyone is interested, I have some pictures here, and am working on a write up of the race here.

If you’re putting race photos up on Flickr, tag them with “2007usopencyclingchampionships” and then they’ll turn up here with other people’s race photos. It would be great to see all the photos in one spot.

This is a great event for Richmond- I’d love to see big name cycling (like the defunct Tour DuPont) come back to the US. I’m still amazed that they could make it up Libby Hill without mass wipe outs- it had to be slick! If anyone has this DVR’d and could put it on youtube, I’d be very appreciative!

Did anyone see the bus try to make it up the hill? What were they thinking? Anyway, they did manage to back him off the hill before the cyclist came back through. It was a lot of fun cheering the everyone on!
