another teen shot

A 15-year-old (that might be an 18-year-old) remains in critical condition at VCU Medical Center after being shot in the head on the 500 block of North 31st Street at about 10:45pm [via]

His name was not available, and his age was unclear. He was said to be 15 by a teenage girl who said she knew him, but police said other people who know the victim said he is 18.

The shooting took place about 10:45 p.m. just south of East Leigh Street in front of a two-story white house.

Yeah, it was a bit crazy on this side of the neighborhood last night. We heard what we thought were 2 shots and then all kinds of screaming and yelling and then a couple minutes later every cop in the world(slight exaggeration) showed up. I’ll comment again if I hear any details from neighbors today.

I went to bed early and left the windows open. A few minutes later I heard the same two shots, one just a second or two after the other. Hope the kids okay. The folks at first precinct deserve much credit for arriving so quickly. They’re always quick to respond and do so by the score.

    from the RTD follow-up:

A 15-year-old boy remained in critical condition yesterday after receiving a gunshot wound to the head Tuesday night in Richmond’s East End.

Richmond Police Capt. John Venuti said a preliminary investigation suggests the 10:45 p.m. shooting in the 500 block of North 31st Street may have been robbery-related. But detectives are also investigating reports that the boy had been involved in arguments earlier in the day over personal issues, perhaps involving a girl.

Anyone need more proof that Churchhill/east richmond could use a good community center? Maybe Rev. McQuinn could initiate something useful for all the black voters that put her in office, instead of taking credit for what developers have done.

This area has the potential to begin healing from years and years of poverty, crime, drugs and mental illness. Now is the time to make the change or at least make a damn effort. As far as I can tell she just talks a good game, plays the religion card, and plays race card and sits on her self serving ass while things remain the same.

I grew up poor and black myself..and a few people, and a few good experiences inspired me to keep trying…and see that there is beauty in life.

There is more to it than exploiting neighbors for quick cash…cash that ultimately goes to selfish stupid shit.

There are positive ways to “represent.”

Go to the ACORN website, search for “teen center” and then call the number listed at the bottom of the article to find out about the amount of funding needed to renovate the building and how to help, etc.

  14. posted by john_m at April 6, 2007 2:52 pm :

McQuinn is fighting for the teen center, it is my understanding that the money was cut out of the budget by the individuals other than the city council. I’ve seen the plans and heard her speak on the subject — she is not just talking to talk. The plans are thorough and real to the point that this could be done and working if the funding was there.

  15. posted by mary anne at April 6, 2007 2:58 pm :

what about contacting ACORN to talk about organizing some sort of fundraising event - at the very least, a fundrasing event would get some press coverage, which would offer a good opening for conversations with the corporate sector, which has the resources to fund this sort of major renovation. just thinking outloud.

So this is a gang-thing between Fulton and Church Hill? I see the graffiti, and my kids know all about it, but it seems like those of us who live in the war zone are clueless. I live a half block away from the shooting. The very next night, there were more shots. I was very scared.

Of course, I called 911. I tried to call McQuinn to find out what they want to do about the situation, but of course, she did not return the call.

My heart breaks for every young man that is caught up in this warfare, and for his mother, and his family.

A juvenile (16 yoa) suspect was arrested last night by your First Precinct FMT in Gilpin Court.

The shooter was known to the victim and his friends. Some sort of beef was going on, however shooter is off the street.

Please see my post on Precinct training - hope to see all my active citizens - please support us by working together towards one common goal - improve quality of life in our neighborhoods - thanks
