Jamie Ryland does awesome tin and copper work. Don’t have his phone number but his shop is on the 2100 block of E.Marshall Street across the street from RBVA’s office.
thanks!
As an aside….
My Girl and I went to the city council meeting in Petersburg last night and one of the agenda items was an appeal to the council from the architectural board due to the board refusing a resident’s request to replace a standing seam metal roof with asphalt shingles. It seems the older couple does not have the 10K it will cost to totally replace their roof and they live in a “Historic Preservation” district.
What does this have to do with Church Hill you ask?
Only that now, not only do you have to ask if there is a home owners association when you are looking to buy a house, but also if the house is in a preservation district. Some could possibly squeak into a home purchase but the maintenance costs would possibly keep them out.
Metal is the way to go but it does cost.
A good roofer can always solder and patch an old metal roof. If the roof has not been coated (vs. painted) it can be repaired. Typically this is much cheaper than a “new” asphalt shingle roof. If someone is pushing an asphalt roof on you- get another roofer! REMEMBER- Maintenace free cannot be maintained.
Our roof has been coated, me thinks. Our house would look ridiculous with shingles, we need to start getting an idea of what kind of hit it will be to get this really fixed.
John, I second Homie’s suggestion. Jamie Ryland specializes in metal roofing, give him a call and at least get him to look at it and explain what’s what. He’s at 2207 East Marshall and the phone number is 648-4525. He’s done roofs around here for over twenty years and really knows his stuff. He can give you ‘an idea of what kind of hit it will be’ and perhaps make some suggestions.
(I posted this in the Yahoo group as well)
For Chimney sweeping and repair, there’s no contest. Castle Chimney is awesome.

I’m also looking for lawn care in Church Hill. Anyone who can take care of my rental and bill monthly would be great!
Thanks,
Andy
mmm… can anyone give a recommendation for someone to repair my porch!!!!!!!!?
Andy, I’ve got a guy that can do your lawncare. Get with John M to get my contact info.
this is a great thread, it’s like angie’s list but without the stupid membership fee.
i’m looking for a really great housepainting person (or crew)who will do a THOROUGH scraping, repair, and repaint of our wood siding and rotting floor of our front porch.
any recommendations?
We had our 2-level back porch rebuilt by RBVA and they did a great job. Jim at Reveal, Inc is good, too.
For estimate comparisons, I was blown away with Sanger Quality Roofing’s amazing copper work (not only secondary, but tertiary fallbacks) when they rebuilt all of our blown-out flashings; I got their name when they did right-looking copper/tin work near Captn Buzzy’s last summer/fall.
I need a fence put up. Not too big of a job. My old one is horrible and falling down. Anyone know anyone?
On the topic of fences: I am interested in having about 36′ of chainlink fence replaced with something that can withstand a rottweiler’s pawing at it, and that he can’t jump over (not my dog, but either the neighbor has him on a chain or he shows up in my yard — there has to be a better option). From anyone’s experience, is a wood fence out of the question?
brenda - i can’t help w/the fence, but if you are interested in doing something about your neighbor’s chained dog, there is an effort to enact legislation against chaining dogs - which contributes to aggressive behaivor, etc. if you are interested in getting on board, check out http://www.virginiavotersforanimalwelfare.com - we have a meeting on april 15th in richmond if you’d like to attend. we would appreciate support from petersburg residents. call animal control the next time the dog gets loose and ends up in your yard. why bother having a dog if it just sits on the end of a chain?
i have a small landscape business and have been living in church hill for two years. i’m also renovating my 1923 home myself so i’m quite good at handyman type stuff, fences, decks, etc. go to my web page (http://www.richmondcityscapes.com) if you’re interested in more info and a contact number.
Expect a call from me John a.
Jamie Ryland is the BEST
Anyone have a recommendation for a cleaning service? We are both working so much at the moment that it would be nice to have someone come in and clean occationally.
