2 related robberies

Thursday night there were two related robberies of individuals, one of these at 21st and Leigh Streets at around 9pm (with the other robbery in Carver).

crime map

From Lt.King of Sector 111:

The description of the perpetrators at both locations was the same: 3 black males, 16-18 years old, wearing dark hooded sweatshirts/jackets. One suspect had what was described as a snub-nosed revolver and a second suspect had a small handgun. As they walk by they make small talk (”what’s up”) and then one pulls the revolver and demands money.

If anyone sees these guys, please call the police. Officers are in the area as much as possible. Most importantly, if you are caught off guard and they approach you, do not resist. No one has been hurt yet, they take the money and run. Call immediately. Also worth noting, both victims were by themselves.

Lt.Hood was a guest at the New Visions Civic League this morning and shared this information there as well.

“do not resist”!? Respectfully I decline. I am a legally armed citizen and if given a split chance I will resist. This is my choice. It is not the choice that everyone should make. If you have a spouse or children it is something for deep contemplation before deciding to except such a responsibility. The reality of the situation is this: With every successful robbery a criminal builds more and more confidence in their ability to use brutal force or threat of brutal force to commit crime. How much longer will this continue until these three men decide that they want more than money?

I understand that “do not resist” has been written for my own safety and that the writer feels that my life is not worth my money. Please understand how I feel. My own safety is not as important to me as that of my family and neighbors. My money means nothing, if they want it they can have it. But I’ll be damned before I allow my robber the freedom to point a gun in the face of one of my family members or neighbors in the future. You say they just take the money and run, but that can change. Now anyone with far worse intentions can read your article and know that Church Hill residents have been advised “do not resist”.

The Supreme Court of the United States of America has ruled that police are only responsible for “the general welfare and safety of the people”. They are in no way obligated to YOUR PERSONAL welfare and safety. That means that YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible for YOUR OWN safety and that of your family and neighbors. Just to set the record straight, there is one Shockoe Bottom resident who frequents Church Hill that (if given the chance) WILL RESIST any illegal advance upon his person. I pray to God that time will never come. If it does, I will resist in the interest of the future safety and peace of my neighbors and loved ones. Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

    Charles Coffey

“Do not resist”…. I’ll shoot first…then ask questions later! These three would be laying in a heap.

The point is, if you do not have a gun at your ready (and know how to use it) you are better off giving it up. Results from national victimization surveys show that the safest burglary (from the perspective of the victim) is when the perp has a gun and the victim does not resist. Sure, the victim having a gun cuts down on the success of the actual burglary, but the average take of most burglaries (especially for those victims who are not themselves drug dealers/criminals) is way south of risking your life or even going to the hospital. Not to mention the potential for ancillary damage from a street gun battle. So, for you that have a Berhard Goetz-Paul Kersey (from Death Wish) fantasy, feel free to join the police force. They could use the help. And before I come off as a raging liberal, in consideration of the recent NY Times story about NYC-PD stop and frisk and car search policy and its logical impact on street crime reduction, I would suggest to our own police that they push hard for a more liberalized policy of taking illegal guns off criminals in targeted high crime-violence areas. Hell, if the president can imprison people indefinitely without a day in court, surely the RPD can develop a data-driven, rational strategy-policy that allows more stop and frisks (one that can answer race or age discrimination charges). If anyone has a better idea short of major social, economic and cultural transformation, I’d like to hear it. Who knows, such a policy might mean less funerals for these poor kid’s moms to go to this year.

another robbery took place tonight. please be careful out there, talk to your neighbors and stay on guard when strangers approach you. peace.

    Charles:

The scenario above would have three men, two armed at the ready, versus you with your weapon still holstered. There is a near 100% chance that it would be you ending up in the hospital that night and they would still have your wallet.

Thank you all for your assistance with these postings and for all of the replies they have generated. I’m sorry to have to tell you that we had another Robbery last night. It occurred at 2010 Cedar St. but was different than the earlier robberies. This happened at about 8:00 p.m. and there were two suspects who were in the victim’s rear yard. These guys were described as 1 white and 1 black male, both 5′7”-5′9″ tall were dark hooded shirts. Officers were in the area on bikes and were at the house within a minute, but saw no one running away. Please let everyone know to keep calling with possible suspects.

    Thanks again.

    Lt. Jack E. King, 1570
    First Precinct, Sector 111

Right on, Charles. Too many of us for too long have ‘not resisted’ too many things: sure, government…peek into my bank account; sure, posessors of illegal handguns, stick them in my face; sure, government…listen in on my phone conversations; sure, sell drugs on the sidewalk in front of my house; sure, send us to war in the middle east! Sometimes I feel like pinning a tea bag to my shirt just to remind myself that at one time some Americans actually threw tea into a harbor in resistance to an injustice.
