   I’ve got one for you, sent in by a friend:

   If elected, do you intend on voting to go ahead and give the VAPAF more than $20 million without strings and without public input? Or do you favor the city owning the Carpenter Center and increased input and scrutiny of taxpayers (and actual performing artists) into the process?

   For many years, there has been promise to revitalize the 25th Street corridor. Our current 7th District representative has promised, on her latest mailer and for many years, to make this corridor an inviting place to shop. What can you do that she has not been able to do to make this an attractive and marketable corridor. (Thanks to those who have recently taken the risk to invest in this area.)

   What got me into politics was when I worked on John F. Kennedy’s campaign in 1959-1960. I was inspired; I felt I could have some input and make a change. I felt like for the first time I could make a difference.

   The first thing that I can do is not make empty promises. The second thing I can do is work with my colleagues on City Council and the Mayor to make sure that the 25th Street Corridor Revitalization becomes a reality, not an empty campaign promise.

   i am sorry, but the above doesnt answer the question. surely there has been several years to review this issue. are you saying you are undecided as to whether or not the tax payers should fund a private institution?

   Mr. Malone: The current councilwoman has repeatedly pledged to institute a Living Wage for Richmond City workers (direct and contracted or temp-workers). And yet, after years of positive talk from McQuinn, other council members, and the Mayor, there is no real push from our elected officials to see it through. Since you helped with this on the School Board, do you think you can turn the tide of inaction at City Hall and raise the labor standards for our city?     The tax payers have already funded the Performing Arts Center through a percentage of the Food Tax.

    Many private ventures are beneficial to the public sector. I would have to review each and every one individually.

    I can’t make a blanket statement about tax payers funding private institutions. I will say that my campaign is based on Accountability, Responsibility, and Transparency. In this case, Transparency would apply to any venture involving tax payers money. If tax payers money continues to go into the Performing Arts Center any tax payer should be able to access and understand the financing.

    Recently on this site, people have made comments about divisions between the Church Hill communities north and south of Broad St. What differences do you see and how would you work on closing this divide?

    This is a very important issue. Thank you for bringing it up.

    I believe as a council person that I can achieve a living wage on the City Council side as I did on the School Board.

    It will take me at least two years to achieve that goal.

    It is an issue whose time has come to be resolved. You can be sure that this is an issue I feel very strongly about and I will do everything I can to see it through.

    The 7th district covers a very large area. Some areas have different concerns and priorities but they are all valid.

    We have a visitor with us at Jumpin’ J’s right now. He lives on the 600 block of 31st Street. He agrees that the concerns in his area differ from the concerns of, for example, someone who lives South of Broad Street. There are, however, similar concerns. Recent burglaries are a worry to everyone.

    I will do my best to be a bridge between all communities. I will always be available to discuss and address these issues, whether it be public safety, blighted housing, or any other concerns.

    I want to thank everyone for their time and questions. I realize that this Q & A format limits the depth of my answers but I hope that I have been helpful. I also want to state that despite the outcome of the election, I will remain dedicated to the people of the 7th District.

    The issues brought up in this Q&A session are just touching on a few of the concerns that affect the 7th District. I will be monitoring this thread until the election.     Congratulations for the recent endorsements from the Richmond Free Press and Doug Wilder!

    Over the last eight years I have watched our neighborhood playgrounds go from fair conditions to just plain awful with broken equipment, graffiti, weeds where sand should be, and holy fences. One time my preschool child slipped through a hole in the fence at the Chimborazo pool(the pool had been closed for years with standing water and garbage). Thankfully she got out with some coaxing because I was unable to fit through the hole myself. I immediately called Parks and Recreation and Delores McQuinn and received zero response.
    Reggie what will you do to improve the state of our neighborhood playgrounds?

    On my way home today from Dorey Park I noticed a few signs for George Allen and they were more often than not paired with signs for Delores McQuinn. I can’t possibly trust the judgement of anyone who would place a George Allen sign in their yard. I’ll cast my vote for Reggie Malone.

    Thanks CR for the question: I’ll be working very closely with city administration about regular maintenance on our playgrounds and park areas. I’m going to need the help of everyone in the district when it comes to advocating for playgrounds and recreational areas. The district will not have any further neglect concerning playgrounds and parks once I’m in office come Jan, 07.

    Response to all - I’ve also been helping Reggie (along with Daniel Goldman, who has posted here, and many many others). Anyway, I just wanted to thank John M. again for putting this up - and thanks to Daniel of 31st St. who actually came to see us yesterday at the coffee shop! I think this was a valuable exercise, and a wonderful forum for discussion. Thanks also to those who participated online. Don’t forget to vote tomorrow!
