council issues overview

The RTD’s creatively-titled RICHMOND CITY COUNCIL 7th District has an overview of the issues in this race.

“It’s a matter of who is committed to reform,” Wilder said.

By reform, he says, he means supporting his efforts as the city’s first directly elected mayor to boost the efficiency of government and improve the schools — efforts McQuinn believes are more smoke than substance, with few real savings in City Hall operations and improper interference with the School Board.

[...]

McQuinn said she feels the big issues are crime, housing and youth programs, not the mayor’s relationship with the council.

Let me think what this campaign is all about.

Delores McQuinn represents the old guard and by that I don’t just mean her mentor Henry Marsh, Walter Kenny and the gang that used to control Council.

No, I’m also talking about the old guard that have been in the Historic district for years, the long-time ACORN members, the Richmond Education Association (REA) crowd, and the people predominatly south of Broad Street who have ruled the roost at CHA for decades.

Now, Malone certainly ain’t a “new guard” type guy — far from it. He does have some baggage. But, at least he’s willing to look at things from a different perspective and seems to be a guy who is open to change and exploring new ways to do things. It may not be the type of change a lot of folks like, but he does seem to have a broader perspective issues, both here in Church Hill and the City as a whole.

Hey! Don’t lump all south of Broad residents together. My family lives south of broad and we will NOT support McQuinn. Malone hasn’t exactly won over our hearts and minds, but along with my vote I’ll give him a chance to reach out south of Broad over the next two years.

I agree with SOB. I live south of Broad as well. I just cannot justify voting for another two years of McQuinn. The area has changed dramatically over the last few years and really needs new leadership to take it to the next level. The redevelopment of this area is far behind where it could have been partly due to McQuinn’s lack of leadership. It’s time for McQuinn to go back to ministering to her people on a full-time basis. Vote for change on Tuesday.

Sorry, I didn’t mean EVERYBODY SOB, just certain people who have been around for a while who act like they own the place.

In all the years Delores Mcquinn has served on City Council I have yet to receive a response from her to any of my calls whereas Reggie Malone has always responded.

    Malone gets my vote.

“Ministering to her people”? Explain that one Trent(Homie) Lott. I may have issues with Mrs McQuinn as a representative but lets not start with the code words and undercurrents. If you would like the diversity (or lack thereof) of the Fan, move to the “Fan”.Church Hill is and will remain diverse, cause I’m not moving anytime soon. Now,if I misinterpeted your statement I apologize.
