Is this a traditional nursing home or some other type of facility? Something must be awry if there are murders in a “senior home”.

    More at the RTD:

Two killings in 10 months brought renewed criticism of security from residents of the 138-apartment building, where the rents are federally subsidized and the residents are mostly senior citizens and disabled adult[...]Recent police statistics indicate trouble at 2400 Burton St. preceded Fox’s slaying. Between Jan. 1 and April 26, Richmond police received 84 calls on the 911 emergency system, resulting in 116 units being dispatched, according to the department’s bureau of emergency communications.

I have an acquaintance who lives in Church Hill House, an elderly fellow who has done some work for me over the past few years. He calls the place ‘the high rise’ and tells terrible stories about what goes on in there. He says the security is NOT good, that non-residents wander around inside 24/7, and that some actually live there illegally with ‘friends.’ I only know that everytime my white face shows up at the door the security personnel demand ID. He’s very cautious not to be seen carrying anything of value into Church Hill House because theft is so common. If it weren’t so sad it would be funny to see the extent to which he has gone to camouflage things… like the crock-pot I gave him last Christmas. Sad as another death there is I was relieved to learn it wasn’t my chum, who is also 78…and if every anyone needs an extra set of hands for a job this fellow can still work me under the table!

The description of this place on the development website is slightly different.

The center courtyard is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a good book and conversation. Church Hill is located within walking distance to many local churches and shopping facilities, and is also along the bus line.

I just sent an email to the Mayor asking what he plans to do about this. I’ll post updates when/if I get a response.

The May 3 Style picks up the story with Murder Strikes Complex; “Squirrel,” 78, Found Dead:

This is the second murder in less than a year at Church Hill House a brick, subsidized-rent apartment building located near 25th and Venable streets. It’s home to about 138 people who have the misfortune of being old or disabled and poor, and therefore stuck.[...]Miller and Rogers speak darkly of the problems that plague Church Hill House. Plenty of people in the building, legitimate residents and otherwise, use illegal drugs, Rogers says. Prostitutes and addicts hang around.

    from nbc12.com:

Delegate Dwight Jones plans to ask the state attorney general to investigate any code violations at the building and make sure Housing and Urban Development money is being used properly. He also wants off-duty Richmond Police to secure the building. On Monday, Councilman Delores McQuinn will ask the city attorney to investigate Church Hill House as well.
