Attending the talk as my academic collegue John Accordino was presenting. While the econometric model utilized offered a rather sanguine view of the program, the questions asked at the end by Greta Harris and Dan Tartar were provacative.

Of course, these dealt with displacement, but more important, the question of how the political regime change has reorganized current and future priorities around neighborhood revitalization. Moreover, a point was raised about how success has rendered continued city involvement more difficult because of rising land and housing prices. A declining federal role in CDBG funding was also raised. Leaving the question as to how the city intends to pay for future efforts at community redevelopment. Other issues/ strategies addressed included strategic land banking (to bring down parcel purchase costs); neighborhood TIF districts; the future of the tax abatement program; the future dedication of retiring tax abatement monies; community targeting (triage) as a redevelopment strategy..etc.

I received CHPN on 4/12 with announcement of this program. I would have gone had I known in a timely manner. Why the delay in getting the news out? Everything you put on the website is old news. That is disappointing!

Check the post date and time on the story, Bill — I posted the story minutes after I received the announcement, almost a week ago, April 6th.

By definition, the weekly email broadcast is a round-up of the previous week’s posts. If you find that you are missing things, you might want to check out the site more often.

And, not to be too testy about this, but I do this for free, outside of my regular job and while going to grad school and restoring my house. Are you volunteering to help?

How about this… If I had not posted the story, you would not have found out about the event at all, right? Maybe you can forget that you ever read about it and you can be just a little bit less disappointed.

    BFF,

    John

Bill, unless you were going to attend for social networking purposes, a copy of the report discussed is available on the Richmond Fed’s website. And, in light of your need for timely announcements, there will be another Richmond Commons on April 24th…

Yours truly is leading a panel on the role of the business community on effective crime prevention outcomes on Tuesday the 25th at 11:00 AM. Probably not worth taking a sick day over, but if you find yourself already sick, why not stop by and fill up on some free institutional coffee.
