alleged ladder thief busted!

Hank alerted us to to a little situation early Friday morning on 23rd Street. It seems that a man was walking down the street in the middle of the night with a ladder. Not inherently criminal, but suspicious (and something that we take very personally).

Ladder thief being prepped to put into the van.

Using a blacklight to look for secret information on the ladder;
ladder thief sits dejectedly on cold, cold ground.

    Additionally, if you call First Precinct (646-3602) and ask for LT Snawder, you can borrow one of the infared pens. This allows you to mark your property so the police can return it.

    Not to arouse any anger or resentment from our police freind, but, hopefully a legitimate query… Given the well advertised reality that our police department is pretty much undermanned and geographically stretched out, why are there 4 units responding to the arrest of a ladder thief? Is there a tactical or crime prevention reason for this show of force/level of reponse? Or, does pulling two cars off their regular patrols have no impact on bigger issues of crime prevention and law enforcement. Just wondering….

    r, if the officer saw him walking down the street, he would have called for another officer to assist him. The wagon would transport the suspect. If a citizen called, then 2 units would be dispatched and the wagon would be called to transport. So, there is really only one additional vehicle/officer there. Also, the officers may have been in the area working on something else based on the time of night. I’m sure the officer will not be offended.

    Having become a witness after a certain point, this is what I saw: The third car brought the black light to the two cars that were already present when I first observed the scene. The van came shortly afterward.

    The whole thing makes perfect sense. Thanks, John.
