feedback please: how do you feel about 4-way stop signs?
How do you feel about 4-way stop signs? As a follow-up, how easy/difficult should it be to get them at an intersection? How many neighbors should need to call before this happens and should the immediate neighborhood have a voice?
Thanks for bringing this up. They just put a bunch more stop signs up on Leigh street and it’s a real pain in the butt! Now I can’t get out of the neighborhood without stopping like 10 times.
Crossing Leigh at 22nd and 23rd southbound would be easier with a stop sign on Leigh as there is always some large vehicle blocking your view. (thus, you can hardly see the likes of Daniel trying to high tail it out of the ‘hood). Stop signs in close knit residential areas help to soothe driving speeds a bit and would make our neighborhood a bit more ped friendly. Now, if we could add some sidewalk lighting and even sidewalks themselves, then we’d be talking. How about this idea… a hefty portion of expiring tax abatements should be dedicated to neighborhood improvements in the neighborhoods where they were realized.
Many studies have shown that 4-Way stops are not appropriate traffic-calming devices (see this study for one example). Half of the Leigh St. traffic still doesn’t stop at the new 4-way at 28th St…
I think that 4 way stops would be great to slow down traffic…if people knew how to use them. Every day I see people either blow threw them or sit there till someone starts yelling at them to drive! For those that aren’t sure how to use them please go to http://www.dmv.state.va.us
I think if we’d had a 4-way stop at Tulip and Venable this wouldn’t have happened to my house.

As for the 4-ways, I like them on Broad St. Traffic is much better than before their installation.
What’s the deal with folks that slow down at an intersection then blow their horn and cruise on through? All night long people pull up to the intersection in front of my house and blow their horn. Its pretty annoying. Can anyone tell me what’s going on here? Apparently I missed something in driver’s ed.
Would be nice to have a 4 way stop at the crazy Princess Anne vs. 21st vs. E. Leigh intersection in front of our house. The yield/stop/right of way action is a disaster waiting to happen. Plus, the traffic signs are hidden by GRTC signs.
I bet if we had police ticketing the people not obeying those traffic signs, we’d be able to get more than just bad drivers off the street. I know we have limited officers in our area right now…does anyone have thoughts or suggestions?
You have to be careful what you wish for. When the police set up on stop signs to get the bad guys, they sometimes get the good one that “just did it this once.” But I do think the police could spend some extra time in these areas. This is the target area anyway.
I think there needs to be more strategy and planning behind stop sign placement, not just a “put them where people complain about them” stance. The Leigh St ones that I complained about were put at 26th, 27th and 28th all at the same time. If the idea was to slow traffic, one would have done the trick. If the problem is big vehicles blocking the view then the solution is limiting parking near the intersection there. Maybe it’s from just moving to town from Baltimore, but Richmond’s traffic signs/signals seem horribly planned to me.
