reports of stolen heat/HVAC units
We’ve received word of a number of thefts of heat/HVAC units in the area. The suspects cut the wires and pipes to the units and take the whole thing. What can one do to prevent this kind of thing?

I called a security friend. He said the only prevention-based solution that came to his mind is to bolt the units to the cement base.
He also suggested that one could install lights to dissuade theft or cameras to catch suspects in action. Alternatively, if you have an alarm system in your home, you could have the alarm company extend the system to these units, so that the alarm would be triggered if the units were moved.
Other ideas?
Install your HVAC units on your roof.
That is so messed up. another solution might be, if your HVAC is in your fenced-in backyard, to get a dog.
So far, the thefts are only from houses that are still under construction. You can, however, put a lock on the disconnect so that the power cannot be turned off. That should take care of it. If you have any questions please email me.
So sorry this happened to you. It happened to us last year. We had a brand new $1500 AC compressor cut from its connection to the house and lifted over a six foot fence. Our neighbor also had their’s stolen. Our house was under construction at the time and not occupied. All of the above suggestions for prevention are excellent!
