February’s Church Hill Newsletter now available

The Feb.2006 Church Hill Newsletter, the monthly newsletter published by the Church Hill Association, is now out at all of the usual spots.

The next CHA general membership meeting will be Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at St.John’s. Up for discussion will be the plans for the Church Hill Market.

The cover article for this issue is a history of Libby Hill Park by Jean Wight. The piece ends with a note about the recently-formed Friends of Libby Hill Park, a group intent on restoring some of the park’s lost luster. For more information, contact Jean at jean_wight@lycos.com.

Also included in the issue is the same information about the task force seeking to expand the historic district that we ran last week.

Of note is a series of emails between Laura Dabb and some guy named Daniel that highlight a still noticeable sense of exclusion by some North of Broad residents and maybe some sensitivity about this by the Church Hill Association. I’m not looking to ruffle any feathers, and while I acknowledge that the CHA has been great for the Historic district and the surrounding areas, I see where it might be hard to feel the connection if living in one of the areas that is more under siege than others. New, young, active residents want to get involved and see an organization on the street doing stuff. New houses and new trees will make some kind of difference, but when the pressing concern is the drug dealer on the next block, one’s timeline contracts a little…

Look at me, I’m famous! Now I need to find a copy of the newsletter. Anyone know where it is distributed?

If anyone is interested in being a part of this “on the street” group let me know. The goal is to rid the neighbourhood of preditory businesses, loser-landlords, gangs and drug dealers.

You can get the newsletter at the Hill Cafe, Buzzy’s, and the shops on 25th just north of Broad, among others. It really is a great super-local news source.

Daniel, I’d like help rid the neighbourhood of preditory businesses, loser-landlords, gangs and drug dealers. How can I contact you?

Is there some plan to make the Church Hill Newsletter electronic? A search brings up a ‘Church Hill Association’ web site, which is still announcing the 2005 Annual Festival Weekend. An option on the main page of the site is ‘Hill News’ but there’s nothing there. Does anybody know if this is a valid site: http://www.churchhillrichmond.com/index.html

    Ann,

http://www.churchhillrichmond.com and email: newsletter@churchhillrichmond.com are the addresses listed at the bottom of the Church Hill Newsletter. Erika Gay is the editor. I hope this information helps.

The newsletter is not online anywhere. The cha website is a joke in my opinion. These are just a couple of reasons why a new north of Broad group needs to be formed.

I’m going to say that I would LOVE to have the Church Hill newsletter available online. The Free Press and the Community weekly need to be online, too.

I guess giving my email address would have been a good idea. You can email me at daniel@simplepilgrimage.org.

  9. posted by Daniel at February 9, 2006 10:44 am :

If any CHA are still reading this, I’ll gladly help with your website and scan the newsletter into a PDF so that is can be available online if you want.
