I’ve heard that BHC has similar problems.

Break ins to houses under construction and thefts of tools and materials are a major problem for Union/Church Hill areas right now. The police are working on the problem.

Same thing happened to us about a year ago. We had about $1,000 worth of tools stolen out of our renovation project. Here’s some prevention advice:

Don’t leave ANY tools on site. And if you must, lock them in a heavy duty job box that no one can pick up and move.

Install a security system and have it linked to the police department as soon as you install the electricity.

Put blinds, paper or boards over all windows that are on the first floor.

Leave lights on, including a porch light, at all times.

Get rid of your dumpster as soon as your through with it. Nothing advertises an empty house under construction more than a dumpster in front of the house.

Buy building materials as you need them. Same goes for appliances. Don’t store things for “later.”

We had an attempted break-in at our live-in renovation in progress last spring, for the visible tools and supplies on the first floor. This happened during the day while we were away at the day jobs. We have an alarm, however, which scared the bastards away, called the police, and alerted our neighbor that was walking his dog near by.
