People were complaining about the traffic it could cause in the Bottom (close to the highway)…just imagine all those people getting lost in Church Hill…
From a fan and attendance perspective, not sure it is wise to put this park on the east end, considering the city and region’s disposable income and young person slant towards the west end. Here, like the bottom, the park would be offered as a redevelopment anchor in an area that is underserved and strategically well positioned with other budding developments. Land aquisition costs should be lower (the $80 million price tag for a minor league park in the bottom is not even close to being economically justifiable) as this is a publically owned site. Thus, I say, let the high quality development begin post haste in the bottom. And if it fails to proceed as promised, I guess we have one more tem on a growing list of things to hold Mr. Strong Mayor accountable come next election time.
Anyone know where Fulton Bottom is exactly?
Are you looking for exact boundaries, or a notion of where Fulton Bottom is located?
The talked about site is at the Fulton Gas Works. If you go East on Main past Poe’s pub and stay left at the fork you will pass it on the right hand side. Lots of bare land and collapsing structures. Can’t miss it.
Ah, and imagine trying to find a stadium in Fulton Bottom if you don’t already know how to get there! Or trying to find your way back out after dark and a few beers! The traffic snarl will be worse than if the stadium were stuffed into the space at the foot of Broad Street which is undeniably simple to get to and from the interstate. Poe’s diners will be trapped in the parking lot which can already be a challenge. Or maybe all the baseball fans will meander through Church Hill between Broad and Sugar Bottom but take a turn around the monument overlooking the James before they realize they have to go back and turn down 31st. Or maybe all the way to the dead end of East Broad before they realize they have to turn around and go down a hill and over some railroad tracks and then…which way do they turn when THAT street deadends? Sounds like something out of Stephen King….
ahhh, the (B)uild (A)bsolutely (N)othing (A)nywhere (N)ear (A)nyone gang chimes in.
Why not build the thing at the site our fine mayor refers to as “that whole in the ground on Broad Street” Build a covered stadium and it could double as a trendy performing arts center during off-season….Hmmm
I think Steve is on to something……..
‘at’, what a delightful assumption from you based on my comments about traffic problems inherent in putting a stadium in fulton bottom!
