reader survey results; call for volunteers

Thanks for your many responses to our chpn Reader Survey. We’ve pulled together the info that you’ve provided and we’d like to use this opportunity to see if we can get some more people involved in the efforts here at chpn.

We would like to have more people involved in this site so that all of the neighborhoods are better represented. On the survey, one reader wrote “don’t exclude South of Broad”. Another wrote that, “until chpn hit the scene, there wasn’t anything for the North of Broad community.” These comments together are interesting in that they reflect the fact that the area is made of many smaller neighborhoods each with their own related but unique experiences. Some areas (such as South of Broad) get a little ignored because we don’t really know what is going on there. This site would be that much more effective if we had volunteers on every neighborhood, every civic league, to share what is going on in their area. We could use writers and/or photographers and/or just plain ol’ observant people. If you are interested in volunteering, contact us.

The Richmond web-world is an interesting one. On the survey, we asked readers to suggest other local sites of interest. RichmondCrime.org came up a few times, as did Save Richmond. Other sites that were suggested include ineffectual.net, Richmond City Watch , c3va, a particular house restoration site, VCU’s Blackbird,
local rugby club Richmond Lions, RVA Blogs, and r804.

Most of the readers are neighbors. This is not really a surprise, eh? A number of readers identified themselves as being from Church Hill or by intersection. Union Hill seems to be especially well represented. Folks form other RVA neighborhoods are checking in, too, with readers in Carver, The Fan, Northside, and Shockoe. We would love to see a chpn-like site for some of the other neighborhoods in Richmond, btw. We also pull readers in Williamsburg and Fairfax, because it is just that interesting here…

There are many things that chpn can do. Suggestions include a more comprehensive calendar, interviews with school principles, and a reader forum/message board. We’ve been looking for a way to get the schools, civic leagues, and churches more involved, though a lack of free-time has kept most of these ideas on the shelf. We do the best that we can on the calendar. If you see something missing, please let us know.

Again, thanks for your feedback. It is nice to know that people are reading. If you are interested in being even more involved, contact us.
