active neighborhood and civic organizations?

The city site has a list of neighborhood and civic organizations within the Seventh District. I’m wondering if all of these are really fuctional… Are there any that you can say are or are not active?

1,000,000 bottle bags

We used to joke that the black plastic bag, emptied of its big bottle of beer and gently floating on the breeze, was the neighborhood flower. Corner stores selling liquor is a constant issue in certain areas, with a fight occurring right now over the store at 2300 Venable Street.

fire on 22nd street (updated)

wric.com is sort of reporting a fire around midnight last night that destroyed an empty house on 22nd Street. The minimal article doesn’t give a block number or provide a photo.

Cyclocross at Chimborazo Park

The 3Sports Red Cross Race, a cyclocross race to benefit the Red Cross’s efforts in the Gulf Coast, was held Sunday at Chimborazo Park.

Another shooting at Fairfield housing projects

Responded to a call of gunfire at 3:15PM yesterday, police found a man who had been shot in the 2100 block of Phaup Street in the Fairfield Court housing project. The unidentified victim died later at the VCU Medical Center. [via]

“Richmond police are looking for information in a shooting that occurred in the 600 block of 32nd Street shortly after midnight Friday. Police have not released many details but say they do have one suspect in mind.” [via]

A meeting was held Tuesday night at Shiloh Baptist Church to discuss possible future designs for the recently cleared triangle at 1097 North 23rd Street.

Couture trial began today

The murder trial of a former Richmond Police officer Michael Couture started today and is expected to last all week. The case stems from the shooting death on Memorial Day weekend 2004 of Santana Olavarria during a traffic stop at Mechanicsville Turnpike and Fairfield Avenue. [via]
