13-year-old MLK student shot on Southside
Dyquan D. Gibson, a 13-year-old sixth-grader at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, was shot and killed early Friday morning.

Jefferson Hill Park to receive repairs
The RTD’s Stuff to Fix announced a repair plan for Jefferson Hill Park. Beginning Sept. 12, a temporary fix will be created to stop further damage to the slope. Later this fall, Public Works will begin working on the design and implementation of the permanent fix to be completed within 9-12 months.

student hit by bus; minor injuries
The RTD is reporting that a Chimborazo Elementary School student was struck by his school bus yesterday afternoon as he crouched beside the bus to tie his shoe but was not seriously injured during the incident .

There will be a town meeting this coming Saturday, September 17th @ 11am at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church on 1223 North 25th Street. Topics may include the Arts Center situation, 25th Street/Nine Mile development, police and safety issues, etc.

“David Cooley is little known to the general public, but he and his company — Restoration Builders of Virginia have made a huge impact on the renovation boom in Church Hill,” said Jennie Dotts, executive director for the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods, a local historic preservation advocacy group. Cooley will be recognized for his work at the Oct. 13 Golden Hammer Awards celebration by the alliance.

Graham’s dying declaration to be allowed
nbc12.com is reporting that the dying declarations of Billy Graham incriminating Calvin Morgan will be allowed the trial of Morgan in the June 16th shooting in Fairmount.

almost all neighborhood schools accredited
richmond.com is reporting that, based on the preliminary Standards of Learning scores for 2005, all but one of the the neighborhood public schools are accredited. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, the only area school not accredited, reportedly narrowly missed in but one area (English).

controversy over extra bullet
The defense attorneys for former city police officers charged in the death of 21-year-old Santanna Olavarria argued to exclude an unaccounted-for bullet found in the rear driver’s side door of Olavarria’s car. If the bullet is determined to have been fired from one of the officers’ guns, it would contradict the accounts of the officers.

Church Hill Thrift continues efforts for Katrina victims
Church Hill Thrift at 319 N 25th Street will be holding two more yard sales for Katina relief efforts this Saturday (Sept.24) and the next (Oct.1). The new store will be holding a yard sale and collecting items to send to Louisiana and Mississippi. They ask you to please stop by and drop of a canned good.
