Teen fatally shot during alleged attempted robbery

Richmond Police are investigating the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy Sunday night around 11:40 PM at 24th and Fairmount Avenue.

Police are not investigating this as a homicide because they say the man who shot the teenager claims it was in self defense. Police say 14-year-old Rodvon Brown was shot while he attempted to rob a 47-year-old man. Police also say they recovered a gun that may have belonged to the dying teen.

But, the teenager’s family says that’s not possible. When asked why Brown was out close to midnight on a Sunday — they said he snuck out of his room to ride his bike and play with his friends.

He was a good child they say, who may have gotten into mischief, but it was never anything serious. And as far as a gun, “I have never seen a gun,” says the teen’s aunt, Laverne Lewis. “I never seen him to be violent in his life … I don’t believe he had one. Can’t no one make me believe this.”

Police say the 47-year-old man who shot the teen waited until authorities arrived on the scene and then told them it was self defense. He was questioned and released on his own recognizance.

    [ from the RTD ]

A 14-year-old Richmond boy was fatally shot late Sunday after he apparently tried to rob a man at gunpoint in the city’s East End, police said.

Rodvon Daymetric Brown, a seventh-grader at Chandler Middle School, died at VCU Medical Center yesterday at 12:55 a.m. The shooting occurred Sunday about 11:40 p.m.

Brown’s family has a hard time believing the teen was carrying a gun, said Alicia Rasin, a crime-victim’s advocate who was consoling family members yesterday. He lived with his mother, an aunt and siblings in the 1400 block of North 23rd Street, right around the corner from where he was killed, Rasin said.

what was that kid doing out at 11:40 on a school night?!? hanging around a known drug block? can this be qualified as child neglect?

Which block is the known drug block? The whole area is a drug neighborhood.

Within the last few days police on mopeds, walking and in cruisers have been hanging out on 19th and Fairmount. Concerned elderly residents have phoned in prostitution complaints. Kudos to the residents and the police for a show of force.

And not so elderly residents. All of Fairmount is a stroll.

Given the info posted here, gotta wonder if the recent number of crimes in August(house break-ins, on street robberies with and without guns, car thefts, attempted car thefts, car break-ins) around Marshall/23rd/22nd/21st and on down 21st to around Grace and Franklin, aren’t related to the Fairmount area problems. Short walk from Fairmount to those areas…and short walk back to buy drugs…

good luck to you guys, keep up the work.
