to donate in Church Hill?

A reader wrote in with this question: I have a decent computer that I plan to give away. Is there an organization in the neighborhood that I could donate this to?

Have you called the YWCA? The Richmond # is 643-6761

I know that some of the teachers at Chimborazo Elementary are in desperate need of computers and computer parts. You could probably just drop them off at the office…

Richmond Freecycle is a web-based organization dedicated to keeping things out of landfills. They do have a few rules, such as you can’t just put things on the curb and post to anyone to pick up. Other than that, I’ve had no problems with them - and I was successful at giving away an old computer monitor.

The main site is http://www.freecycle.org and you can browse for groups from there - plug in Richmond, Virginia and hit search.

Also, craigslist has a ‘free’ section, you can list stuff there too. Kelly’s suggestion about the YWCA is good, they used to have a battered women’s program that might need clothes. The Daily Planet might take clothes, too, they deal with homeless people.

Richmond Hill (2200 block East Grace St., 783-7903) might be able to use a decent working computer. They’d not want clothes.

There’s the Peter Paul Development Center (newly constructed building) at 22nd & X that serves school-aged kids and seniors. They might use both the computer and the clothes, not sure.

I’ve met the Director of the Peter Paul Development Center and remember her mentioning a need for technology support/donations. i think they would truly appreciate your donated computer and/or IT assistance if any neighborhood residents are willing to volunteer.

while i’ve got the ‘floor’, I work for the Daily Planet and happily accept men’s and women’s clothing donations - especially ‘business casual’ clothing and shoes that our clients can wear to work. FYI - Ladies stiletto heels are greatly appreciated but comfortable athletic and flats are more practical donations for our clients that often walk to work and where they are often on their feet all day.

email me at conmyma@dailyplanetva.org and i’ll be happy to make arrangements to pick up donations or schedule a time to drop by 517 w grace with your donations and give you a tax receipt. (john, please forgive me for soliciting neighborhood support on your blog)
