Man gets 3 ½ years in death of cyclist
A 30-year-old Aylett man was sentenced yesterday to 3½ years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the traffic death of bicyclist Earl “Bam-Bam” Spellman in the 1600 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike on Sept. 17, 2004. [via]

Unsung Heroes profiled in City Edition
The print-only City Edition profiles Richmond’s unsung heroes, including Eric Snead, a Church Hill letter carrier. “Snead’s route take him all around Church Hill, mostly on foot. He estimates he walks about 10 miles a day, carrying up to 35 pounds of mail in his satchel.”

As might be expected, Church Hill was well represented among this year’s Golden Hammer Award winners and nominees. The Golden Hammer Awards are given out for excellence in preservation in Richmond by the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (ACORN).

Heating-assistance program available
Richmond-area residents who live in the Richmond Department of Public Utilities service area may apply for help with heating bills if needed. To qualify for the MetroCare heating-bill assistance program, residents must demonstrate a special need or hardship.
