Starting with a bang.

Last year, city police police received more than 200 reports of promiscuous shootings during an eight-hour period that began New Year’s Eve. From here on 23rd Street, that count seems low.

Free smoke detectors and fire-safety survey

The Richmond fire department offers a free fire-safety survey for all homes in the city. The department also offers to provide any home in the city with free smoke detectors and free installation. Call 646-6663 to set up a fire-safety survey for your house.

Sunny Supermarket opens on 25th Street

The Sunny Supermarket has opened on the 900 block of North 25th Street in the old Community Pride building.

In the Flair section of the RTD today, ‘Popular bread man is on a roll now’ profiles the Church Hill baker Mark Van Atter and his Bajaj delivery truck. The print version has photos that the website does not display.

Tricycle Gardens Fall 2004 Update

Tricycle Gardens is a community garden located on Jefferson Avenue between 23rd and 24th Streets. This year was a successful first growing season for the gardens.

Gaston damage lingers

Heating-assistance program available

Richmond-area residents who live in the Richmond Department of Public Utilities service area may apply for help with heating bills if needed. To qualify for the MetroCare heating-bill assistance program, residents must demonstrate a special need or hardship. Apply at the East District Family Resource Center at 2405 Jefferson Ave., or call 644-4496.

Wilder’s public forum on crime

Around 500 people came out last night to a public forum on crime held by mayor-elect Wilder. “I want to see some action,” the former governor said as he kicked off the session. [ more at the RTD ]

ACORN’s 2004 Golden Hammer Award Winners

As might be expected, Church Hill was well represented among this year’s Golden Hammer Award winners and nominees. The Golden Hammer Awards are given out for excellence in preservation in Richmond by the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (ACORN).

Unsung Heroes profiled in City Edition

The print-only City Edition profiles Richmond’s unsung heroes, including Eric Snead, a Church Hill letter carrier. “Snead’s route take him all around Church Hill, mostly on foot. He estimates he walks about 10 miles a day, carrying up to 35 pounds of mail in his satchel.”
