New houses for sale in Sugar Bottom

With a major rahab working it’s way through the system and a set of new homes for sale (BELOW), and word that the Armitage building has been sold again, it definitely looks like a new day for scruffy ol’ Sugar Bottom.

From zillow:

3010 E Franklin St
Richmond, VA 23223
3 beds 4 baths 2,394 sqft
$399,950

Located just steps away from Libby Terrace and “The View That Named Richmond”, Sugar Bottom RVA is a collection of new construction homes that will afford residents the best of the urban-walkable Church Hill lifestyle while also providing the peace of mind and reliability that only a new house can afford.

Which of course begs the question: does anyone know the etymology of the name “Sugar Bottom”?

@RVAdirt. I always thought it was because molasses or sugar was processed and/or shipped in the area, but maybe I’m mistaken? Sounds like Sugar Bottom *became notorious* because of prostitution, but was not *named for prostitution* (Though, if that is the case, it’s sort of hilarious…)

I remember a double murder of some good people in the house on the end
