I’m sorry, what? Why are they closing for an entire month? I can’t imagine it’s easy to make a profit closed.

Great for them! In Europe, businesses routinely close for the month of August. If I were a small business owner, I would find a way to do the same. We will be ok and will forward to proper pies in September!

Mars, perhaps they make enough of a “profit” during the other 11 months that allows them the opportunity to treat themselves for such dedication and hardwork.

Mars, stupid pointless comment of the day award.

Every year someone clueless wonders how they stay in business… and yet, every August proper pie, after CRUSHING IT for 11 months, affords the ability to close for a month. Good on them.

What @6 said. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for two years and inevitably, someone is shocked these guys close down for a vacation. They do it every year, folks. And if I remember correctly, they go biking. The only people that will suffer will be the out of towner tour bus types that don’t know better. The west enders will just go back to their Panera life. #GoodForThem

I always wonder how this works for their staff? I think the owners have every right to a break, but seems like a month off could be tough for folks that need to work.

OMG! This business has done this every year since they opened! I don’t know what they do for the staff but I am sure they are taken care of! Why does anyone feel the need to second guess them or comment on why?? I, for one, think it’s great that these small business owners can do this for themselves every year!

I have suffered in years past through the month of September. I was wondering if anyone knew of a support group that has been established to get those of us that have an addiction to their pies through this tough time?

I’m willing to bet that they get a huge boost in sales the month prior to their closing just by notifying their patrons that they are closing. If you can get two months of sales in one month, may as well take the second month off!

Neil’s from New Zealand; it’s always been my understanding he and Nikki go back there every year. August is winter in New Zealand too so I imagine they enjoy getting out of an RVA summer!
