A house on Cedar Street near 25th Street has again (previously) been covered in spray painted in political slogans by the resident. A handwritten note posted at the front door indicates that the homeowner has been contacted by the city regarding the paint.
I knocked at the door, but there was no answer.

I have plenty of snarky things to say about almost every politician of either party running for anything this year, but I hadn’t thought to paint those things on the side of my house. Charming. And look! Even Lester Holt got an honorable mention!

Live really close to this guy, heard a bunch of yelling Monday night during the presidential debate that I stepped outside to see what was going on. Then saw this, this morning. House was fine yesterday.
I guess the guy really doesn’t like Joe Morrissey.

If this is a rental , the owner needs to be put on notice by the City. The cost of removing graffiti , plus court costs might get this moved somewhere else. If on the other hand, the homeowner is the person responsible, I can only agree with Tanetta!
Interesting use of the K’s. Good thing he added that extra “K” word at the end otherwise the neighborhood might read it as KKK. The Vice presidential debate is October 4th, and the next Presidential debate is Sunday October 9th. Neighbors, get the popcorn and lawn chairs out.

I have to ask: are there children in the home? Sort of worried about their safety if the artwork is any indication of the stability of adults there.
@12 – That was rather unhelpful and unkind. Political opinions aside, it does seem that this person or people are in need of serious help. I’m sorry that, as bystanders, we are not in a position to encourage them to get it.
I know some history here. The house is occupied by the son of the owners who live in Chesterfield. They were contacted last time this happened and it was cleaned up. I do not think they would be surprised to see that this has happened again.

Cleaned up only barely. The old graffiti was plainly visibly under the thin coat of paint they applied to cover it up.
That said, I am worried about the safety and mental state of this individual and hope the appropriate agency visits to do a welfare check.
If the painter is the owner, I see no reason the City should force it to be taken down.
I wish the city challenged people more often. Better to challenge than to coddle. This person has their own take. Let America’s cities be a reflection of its culture: free speech, individual expression, debate.
Just called the cops. He has music cranking out of his house. Its 9.56 pm on Thursday night.
Live on the next block over and had to call the police because he’s singing along(on a mic) with a cd on speakers. It actually woke us up. I agree he is entitled to his opinion, however, I am entitled to live here without being subjected to it. He does need help but if he and his family and the “State” won’t get it for him I will do what I have to do to live undisturbed.
@Don O’Keefe. The City can and should force the owner to take down the graffiti because the house is in a historic district and the “painting” is not, as I understand it, in compliance with the regulations that cover that lot.
It is not about an abridgment of his speech. It’s about compliance with zoning.

This does not appear to be a, ” free speech, culture, or individual expression” issue. It appears to be an issue with someone who does not know how to live in close proxciminty with other people. Some posters have expressed their concern that children may be living in this house. If that is the case, CPS needs to be contacted, This persons parents need to be put on notice that their son is not taking his meds. I am sure they are doing the best they can and have had a long suffering history with their son who is clearly not behaving in a rational way.
This person does not appear to be capable of “complying” with anything, therefore I think the neighborhood should gather around and offer help to him and his unfortunate close neighbors. I will be making some phone call to social services, and regulatory agencies today. Please all of you take time to do the same!?
I drove by earlier today to get exact address and the ” person” was playing loud music and hammering additional signage onto the house. There were a lot of nail holes being made in the porch roof and siding.
A group of kids, at least a year ago, were living next to him at 2405. Called the police on them one night because of loud music. The officer told me that they had a full band equipment set up in living room.
Follow up to last night…Took about 20 minutes but the police did show up last night. Music stopped right away. It had to have been bothering other neighbors…
Not sure if anyone remembers but CBS 6 actually interviewed him last time he painted his house. Said he was going through a divorce and needed to express himself.
@Jean, My comment in #22 was simply to clarify to Don O’Keefe why the city could compel the removal of the graffiti. My comment in #18 notes that I think the individual may well be suffering from a mental illness that is getting the best of him at this time–although I am not a qualified expert in the field. I have requested a welfare check-in by the authorities in case the individual needs help or is a danger in any way to themselves or others and hope that said check was made.
Night two of music. Night two of cops called.
So while the officer and I were speaking, the individual approached us and introduced himself as Steve. Asked if we were enjoying his work. He was not happy I called the police. Asked if I was the one who called cops last night. He told us he owns the house and that he has taken a restraining order out on his parents and brother. He seemed very agitated. The officer told me this is her patrol and she’s keeping an eye on him.

When I drove by yesterday to get an address he seemed manic to me . I am also not a mental health expert but as you say he is not doing well mentally.

The problem is just getting worse. This has been going on for three months. At this point in time the neighborhood just needs a break from this. He is getting verbally abusive, blocks the sidewalk and plays his music at all hours. The police show up, but nothing changes. He is delusional he seems to be spiraling out of control. His parents are listed as owners of the property, but they also appear to be powerless. His behavior is getting unpredictable and I think everyone is rightfully on edge. Send Help.
Restraining order or not, the parents own the property and should step in. Also, Adult Protective Services needs to be contacted since he is obviously has or is going through a mental breakdown. No one in their right state of mind acts this way. A danger to himself and others.
Bill, et al – the was mentioned during the business meeting of CAR (the 3:30-4 part). I’m sorry I can’t remember what they said they were going to do, but if minutes are published, look up 13 December (i walked in during last 3 minutes). I think this dood is older than your standard garden variety 20-something gonna-shoot-everyone white verge-of-breakdown male. I’ve seen him and his graffetti pickup twice and he appeared to be late 30s to me. But beards are deceiving. Continue to log calls. The documentation will help the case in the long run. Sorry 🙁 HNY let’s hope.
I agree. He is a ticking time bomb. But no one seems to be able to do an intervention before it gets sadder.
Bill have you tried whatever the mental health agency is now? It used to be something like Richmond Behavioral Health Services, not sure what the title is now, but for sure the cops have contact with it or with a social worker who knows what to do. You might try reaching out to First Precinct during working hours to get a contact name and phone number. Obviously something other than CAR is needed. Contact John Murden on how to contact me, you and I have met in the past; I’ve got a social worker (retired) friend in the area.
celeste – i just read your message – sat dec 31 – then read rest of messages — sounds like parents need to “green warrant” him as probably can show that his behavior is endangering himself or others … the agency you spoke of is RBHA/richmond behavioral health authority — one of our neighbors in Mann Netherwood area just recently retired from there — Ms Bonaparte … she could probably provide accurate info on what to do with this situation — she would be better equipped than me for current info — green warrents can be issued thru emergency rooms i think —
