Can you help clean up Triangle Park on Saturday?

Do you want to be a friend of the Triangle Park? Bill Conkle has organized a clean-up of the small park at Carrington Street and 23rd Street for tomorrow, Saturday, September 9, at 9:00 AM.

Can you help pick up litter in area, pull grass and weeds from beds and sidewalks, and trim trees and bushes?

Contact Bill Conkle, President, Friends of Jefferson Park, at (804)615-3764 or junkifunki@aol.com for more information.

What rights do we have as property owners associated with the City addressing the problem of weeds overtaking the sidewalks? It looks terrible. We need some attention.

As far as I know we as homeowners, renters, and landlords are responsible for the weeds on our sidewalks and curbs in front of our residences. It’s too bad most folks up here ignore that and many areas look pretty trashy both north and south of Broad. We are also responsible for removing ice and snow within our property lines. The city is responsible for maintaining public spaces and sidewalks around city/state(?) properties/businesses.

I haven’t seen much of the Clean Sweep workers in a while who used to clean trash from sidewalks around the Bottom and elsewhere. If people want to exercise, there are plenty sidewalks and curbs to work up a sweat, start a clean your sidewalk block party.

The owner of the property adjacent to the sidewalk is responsible for the basic maintenance of the sidewalk. Talk to your neighbors.

Volunteers made a huge difference at Triangle Park last Friday morning. It looks great! Thanks to Rick Tatnall, John Whitworth, John Rossi and Daquan Bowens for their donated time and labor.

The Friends of Jefferson Park welcome citizen volunteers to help keep the park beautiful. Please call me if you want to help out. Please call 804-615-3764 or email me @ junkifunki@aol.com We also need people interested in serving on our Board and taking a leadership role in our organization.

We are also interested in mobilizing citizens near the Triangle Park to take an active role in keeping it nice.

Take a look a Chimborazo Park, if you want an example of weeds taking over a sidewalk and everything else. It gets worse every day. Property owners are responsible for clearing their sidewalks (but not general maintenance of sidewalks) and keeping their grass cut. Property owners can actually get fined if they don’t maintain their property. The City, however, seems to have no responsibilities at all when it comes to maintaining City property.

I hope there will be a general house cleaning, and a restructuring of services properly manned and funded, at City Hall once we have a new mayor. I would like to know how the mayoral candidates plan to address the issue of abandoned/neglected properties that blight our neighborhoods. There are more enforceable neighborhood covenants in planned suburban communities than there are in historic districts. Homeowners, renters, and businesses are just as guilty for ignoring their share of weeding.
