Y&H Mercantile opens Friday on Franklin Street

Church Hill residents Yaa Taah and Hansi Armentrout’s Y&H Mercantile opens in their newest brick&mortar spot on Franklin Street in Shockoe Bottom on Friday. The contemporary women’s and men’s also sells online.

The couple had originally moved to Richmond from Oakland, California in late 2012 to live the dream, to step out of the corporate world to open and run their own business. A former merch buyer for Gap, Yaa Taah says she’s “always wanted to have my own store”.

Y&H Mercantile originally opened in 2013 on Robinson Street next to Halcyon. After a go at that location, the couple ended up in back in Oakland for a bit – but tellingly never sold their house in Church Hill.

The merchandise reflects both of their interests. Yaa Taah describes her taste as global bohemian, drawn to prints, color, and texture. Hansi brings an interest in vintage Americana, and the two blend into something that feels very right now.

The new shop will initially be open from 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM Wednesday – Saturday.
