The incredible woman behind @kolacherva just signed her lease on a commercial kitchen space in Church Hill! Richmond, you are one lucky city. These are the best kolaches I’ve ever tasted, and they’re made by hand, courtesy of a truly amazing soul. Coming at you very soon!
Heather Horak has been working towards launching Craft Kolaches for a good while, and will begin selling this season at the South of the James Farmers Market starting June 4. A Church Hill resident, she’s been looking for commercial kitchen space up here the whole time, with little luck – until now 🙂
From a Richmond Magazine piece back in December:
Kolaches, pronounced kuh-LAH-cheez, are little meals-in-bread pockets, and they hail from the Czech Republic by way of Texas. Let’s go ahead and coin the term Czexan right now — you’re welcome, proper-noun Scrabble cheaters. Horak’s new small business, Kolache, offers breakfast kolaches stuffed with eggs, sausage, gravy, and other morning favorites, as well as sweet-filled kolache varieties containing jam, pulped fruit, cream cheese, poppy seeds or a combo. Horak’s great-grandmother’s recipe is what you’ll be tasting when you sample the Kolache brand.”

Oh yaaaas
Just to be clear, these are going to be sold at the farmer’s market in June and not a retail store front?

Oooohhh Man. The Hill’s caloric intake just got kicked up…again!
And in my neighborhood?! I am SO excited!
Ready for the yummy goodness!
Wonder if they’ll be anything like the Russian kalachi that I grew up with… Regardless, great to hear!
Good thing the Hill is so walkable. Because we’d all be fat and broke otherwise.
Erin More pastries for Church Hill!
Bad news for our waistlines!
Kolaches in Richmond?!! as soon as they get a two-stepping spot, they’ll have pretty much all the best parts of Texas…

Is it too soon for me to start saying WHEN WHEN WHEN WHEN???
Looks amazing & I can’t wait!!
Yeah, generalizing that Kolache “hail from the Czech Republic by way of Texas” is very incorrect. Either way, I am excited to see them in RVA (the traditional kind, not the Texas version).

Everyone: Thanks for your overwhelming support! I’m glad y’all are as excited as I am to bring kolache to Richmond.
For now, my primary committment is to selling @South of the James farmers market, and to do this, the City requires me to be in a commercial kitchen. Hence, my lease on this space. Once the kitchen is inspected, I will take special orders and have limited retail hours.
I do have plans to eventually turn this into a full-time retail space. This will be a bit process as I am currently planning to keep my 40 hr/week physical therapist job indefinitely; retail open hours will gradually ramp up as I figure out how to balance it all! We will have a big ol Kolache party when I first open my doors! In the meantime, please stop by and say hi! ~Craft Kolache/Heather

Looks like it’s going in the old “Chocolates by Kelly” space at 600 N. 29th St (corner of Leigh and 29th)?
