Tatnall officially announces bid for mayor

In an email this morning, Rick Tatnall officially announced that he is running for mayor:

Dear Citizens of the City of Richmond,

On April 4th, the anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I submitted my Certificate of Candidate Qualification paperwork to seek the office of the Mayor of the City of Richmond in the November 2016 election. I chose the 4/4 date to honor Dr. King who has been an inspiration for me over the years and whose example I have tried to follow as I have worked tirelessly for my home community of Richmond.

I also honor Dr. King by naming my campaign Rick for Richmond – The Fierce Urgency of Now. I believe that Richmond, America and all mankind face daunting obstacles that can only be overcome with an immediate and massive outpouring of involvement from the citizens. I believe this is Kairos – the right and opportune moment for the regional Community of Richmond, with the City at the geographic center and as the region’s heart and soul. Kairos involves both recognizing the moment and seizing the opportunity. It requires immediate action and action is what I do best. I am often describes as an activist but I like to think of myself as an actionist.

For more than a decade I have been acting in support of the Plan to Create a Proud and Unified Community of Richmond. As Mayor, I will continue working this plan and will inspire a growing number of Richmonders to join the effort. By working together with pride and purpose we can increase the quality of life for all citizens of the City and the region. Then RVA can change the world by teaching other communities how to do the same.

Below is a link to my Replenish Richmond website offering a wide variety of information about my Rick for Richmond Campaign. At the bottom of the webpage are other links to information including my experience and qualifications and my assessment of the other mayoral candidates.

An important aspect of the Rick for Richmond Campaign is that I will not be soliciting or accepting any contributions from any person during the course of the campaign. I believe that money has ruined the election process in America and I want to make a statement by winning this election because I am the best person for the job, not because I raised the most money.

The website is Onion-like too. The page of personal attacks on every other candidate is hilarious, especially his criticism of each white candidate that they have “absolutely no understanding of what it is like to be black and poor in Richmond.” Mr. Tatnall doesn’t own a mirror, it seems. His logo, which I think is supposed to be a heart with a shovel handle ends up looking like a stabbed heart. The other content is like reading the extended internal stream-of-consciousness monologue of one of Faulkner’s dimmer characters.

Mr. Tatnall is officially the first candidate I have seen that would rank below Michele Mosby on my depth chart. I didn’t think that would be possible. In that respect, I congratulate Mr. Tutnall for achieving a height (or depth) no one thought possible.

You’ve got meet Rick in person to get him, I think. He is a very earnest and thoughtful man. He’s smart, and thinks a lot about the issues facing our community.

And yes, he could probably use an editor.

John, I hope that’s the case, because nothing in the press release or on the website that represents a serious candidacy for the mayorship.

And why he thinks spending entire page trashing his opponents when he is not well-known enough or otherwise demonstrating a level of legitimacy, is beyond me.
