Please do not take vegetables from the community gardens

From Jennifer at the Chimborazo Playground Community Garden:

There have again been quite a few thefts from the garden. This year it seems worse than ever and is ongoing rather than one or two times.

I just wanted to use this forum to clarify to CHPN readers, if there any that didn’t already know, that the Chimborazo Playground Community Garden is not “up for grabs” produce (I understand that there is a garden nearby that does that and it seems to have confused some people).

Each plot is an investment of time, money, and sweat from a different family. There have been a number of cases where a gardener was watching a prized vegetable in anticipation, only to find it stolen at picking time. Very disappointing!

This should just go without saying. How unfortunate that it doesn’t.

I saw a deer in there at 5am last week. So maybe he’s the one breaking the social code.

Are folks homeless or hungry? Maybe ‘we’ consider putting a sign to where free produce is available …? I’m sure the rabbit or deer wouldn’t be offended but since its considered ‘theft’ in the community of neighbors, maybe we can be a resource for this situation.

MzNicole ‘s suggestion sound good– for signage to explain the garden and direct people to places where it’s ok to pick.
