This slide has informative drawings (NSFW)

Perhaps unknown to most, this slide at Jefferson Park has a set of most informative graphics inside the cupola at the top.

OMG! Yes they are informative. Did Calvin ask about them yet? I hope not! Did you report them on seeclickfix?!

And what is NSFW? Something like not for family viewing?

NSFW = Not Safe For Work

Good idea to put ’em on SCF.

This is what happens when Art Programs get cut from our schools; horribly drawn body parts.
In all seriousness though, is this plastic even able to be covered with paint?

Thanks John Murden, I voted for it on Seeclickfix. Sheez.

There is some at George Mason as well. I tried to get some off, I was mildly successful. Permanent marker just leaves behind that shadowy outline though.

There is a product called “Goof Off” which comes in a liquid or spray. I’ve found it to be very effective. You need to use another cleaning product (i.e. “Fantastic”, “Simple Green”) after it though as it has a very strong odor:

you could always get another marker and scribble over it to cover it up

We should all listen to Paul Granger and Chimbo, and I for one propose we all meet up at dusk to trace over these crude and tasteless drawings with another sharpie in order to wipe them clean afterward. We can replace them with inspirational messages about the power of sharing and/or caring.

Oh no basic human anatomy like children have giggled about in playgrounds since time immemorial! Lets not have an akward but necessary conversation with our kids about it, replace it with some naive pablum about love and sharing that is completely useless!

Bk
Are you aware of the age of the children that use this play equipment? Clearly no one taught you much about love and caring and “necessary conversations” are the preogative of the parent. They decide the time, place, verbage and wether or not to use graphics in the explanation of the facts of life.

Children of this age should be naive! Are you the one that did it in a misguided attempt to educate the little ones?

From the perspective of a child mental health professional who works with kids who have survived abuse/neglect, there’s a strong likelihood that the children who made these drawings have been exposed/victimized by some sort of sexual trauma. While we now live in a culture where kids are often prematurely sexualized per exposure to adult content via TV, the internet, pop culture, etc., a graphic drawing of this sort by (especially) a pre-pubescent child could very well be a reactive symptom of their trauma. These drawings could very well be an externalization of a traumatic experience & I hope this discussion might also be redirected to discussing the reality that child sexual abuse in all communities, including our own, is common and that as community members we all have a role in “breaking the silence.”

If you ever see a child engaging such a sexualized drawing know that it is possibly a “red flag” that they have been exposed to sexual abuse. Also, know that you can be more than just a by-stander. Depending on the setting and situation, you or another appropriate adult might consider asking the child, in a non-shaming way, about the drawing. Either way, it is always important to report even “suspected” signs or red flags of abuse/neglect to Child Protective Services or by calling 1-800-552-7096.

If you would like additional information about “red flags” and how to respond as a community member, please consider contacting Greater Richmond SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now).

Similar issues with JP’s playground and park house were submitted via SCF. The city was quick to respond.

I think John Murden already opened a SeeClickFix case on this, but now Friends of Jefferson Park has also opened one. I’m not sure if this link will work to take you where you can vote on SeeClickFix, perhaps Mr. Murden can fix this link and post it? Thanks.

The Little Free Library at the Blue Wheeler also got tagged. Rubbing alcohol removed it very easily.
