Schools: register for kindergarten, petition in support of extra $24 million

A petition (HERE) has been launched to garner support for fully funding Superintendent Bedden’s requested budget for next year. His request for $24 million above the baseline funding of $260 million was denied by Mayor Jones.

Kindergarden registration day is Thursday, April 16. Smart Beginnings from the United Way has info about the process:

Children who are five years old by September 30th can start kindergarten in the fall, but first they need to be registered. Thursday, April 16 is the day for on-time registration for children in Richmond.

There is quite a bit of paperwork needed to register a child for kindergarten, and pulling everything together takes time. Parents and caregivers are still encouraged to attend registration even if they do not have all the documents because exceptions could apply. These are documents needed for registration:

  • Child’s official, certified birth certificate
  • Child’s Social Security card
  • Proof of address
  • School Entrance Health Form
  • Photo ID for parent of legal guardian

Until the School Board consolidates and closes schools, I do not support giving them an extra $24 million. If they are willing to step up and close near-empty schools, I will support giving them extra money.
