What’s next?

Rumor has it that the building most recently home to Str8 Out of Philly was recently sold to someone in the food service industry.

I have a dream where Mel from Curry Craft opens a take-out Indian joint or the Shoryuken Ramen folks move in, but nobody asked me.

I have a dream that Little Mexico re-opens a burrito chop here. Nobody asked me, but I still want a burrito.

I heard great things about Str8 Out of Philly, but evidently missed it…. Where is this at?

I wondered the same as Kai; they indicated they were moving, not closing, but that was a while ago.

I too would like a quality take out/delivery food place.

I wonder if Dutch & Co., are finally taking their hot dogs to a new level.

Who here knows how to order bagels? Anybody?

Hint: you say “I want 6 stinky bagels and 6 sweet bagels” so they know how to package your order.

If you had grown up with a bagel shop you’d know!

@Kai–this is on 29th Street behind Anthony’s on the Hill.

And I’d go for Indian.

Agree with #11, or maybe a convenience store. You know, just a place you could pop-in & pick up a 40 oz King Cobra. & some powdered donuts.

I would love to see a Chinese restaurant. East Villa used to be my favorite, but the quality has declined with the new owners.

Prospects are limited by restaurant economics. Places that make a financial go of it do so because either (1) they’re big enough and have the sort of menu that enables pushing lots of food at a modest price to lots of people. This building is too small for that, so we have (2) the place has the cachet to serve a few people from a tasty and fashionable menu with fairly high prices (plus there’s more money from wine).

Yes, we need another convenience-grocery-general store along the lines of the old Check Mart where Buzzy’s is now but a lot cleaner and stocked properly.

I have not researched this store. Does anyone know what it was when originally built? I don’t think it is big enough for any sort of food business. I have eaten there twice and can see the limited space.

East Villa has new owners? No wonder why I never see that sweet older lady in there. Bummer!

@eric – It has a full basement, which helps a lot.

As I understand, the building I owned by that church on the corner and they select the tenants.

East Villa is owned by the same family, just managed by a different family member. Ya (Tina is her “American” name) is the name of the girl managing the place now. She is the former manager”Becky’s” niece and is very sweet. Introduce yourself to Ya and welcome her to the neighborhood and I know she’ll be open to any request/suggestions you have. She has made changes to dishes that I’ve requested. The place for rent on 25th would be great to have a fast food Chinese place like East Villa closer to my home for when I’m too lazy to cook.

East Villa is as good as it ever was and has NOT changed owners. If you are going to trash a business, at least get your facts right.

These are hard working, honest people!

Jean, she did not “trash” the business – she merely said that the quality had declined which is her opinion and she has a right to it. Stop your nastiness – it’s getting tiresome.

Checkered table cloth Italian Joint where they know you by name. Not meant to compete w/Anthony’s.

A group of us got together and ordered East Villa take out. It was outstanding! The oil to fry the egg rolls was fresh, the eggrolls were hot and crispy. The beef and broccili was perfect. Several special requests were made and graciously complied with.

We ALL agreed that the quality was excellant, price was good, service fast! What more could you want? Oh yes, and the original owners are still there.

That is our opinion, and we are entitled to it!

As far as being nasty, I do have to admit that someone with the self designation “Queen of Church Hill” title who has NO credibility in the resturaunt business yet hands out ‘opinions’ SO LIGHTLT bothers me. I have known who the “Queen of Church Hill” is for a long time.

If I felt an apology were necessary, I would make one. I am so sorry East Villa, keep up the good work1

I don’t think it matters whether there are new owners or new management.

A Chinese place with a greater variety would be fabulous. I’ve had a hankering for Peking duck for quite some time!

There were movers here yesterday clearing out the place. Removed all the appliances and left over products – yes, there was still food in there all this time, yuck! Hoping it’s do some renovations for the new place coming in.
