Mary Lou Decossaux leaves her mark on Fulton

Mary Lou Decossaux was born in Miami, reared in New Jersey and studied in France. But she left her most indelible mark in her beloved Fulton Hill, where she transformed an abandoned Williamsburg Road post office into a community hub. […] Miss Decossaux — who won awards for her community organizing and was appointed last March to Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ commission on poverty — died at her home Tuesday after a long illness. She was 54.

The Neighborhood Resource Center will host a tribute to Miss Decossaux’s life on Saturday, January 7 from 1-3PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Neighborhood Resource Center and sent to 1519 Williamsburg Road, Richmond, VA 23231.

I could not comfort myself after the Harvey family died. I met Mary Lou who set me on the path of healing by providing me with a deeply meaningful way to think about and give to others. The quality of my daily life improved and I am healed. She has provided this opportunity to so many. We will miss her. Thank you, Mary Lou.

My Heart goes out to the Decossaux and NRC family. Mother Earth has lost yet another pioneer and crusader of change. In the short period of time that I was blessed to work along side of Mary Lou, my life has become impact-fully changed and ignited to continue to be an agent for change. I am honored to have known you. Thank you Mary Lou.

Peace and Love

Cecelia Rich
